Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the art and practice of using essential oils extracted from aromatic plants and herbs to restore or enhance health, beauty and well being. It is suggested to originate in Sumer at the mouth of the Euphrates River around 3000BC, as far as earliest records show. Simple stills were used where Myrrh and other aromatic grasses were heated in water to provide a fragrant steam.

The Egyptians even had a God of Fragrance and Perfumes, Nefertem, showing the importance that they placed on aromatherapy, and the benefits to the well-being of the mind and body.

How does aromatherapy work?

Essential oils, as we know, are an important part of aromatherapy. There are two main methods of using the essential oils - inhalation and topical application.

Inhalation has the most rapid effect, as the aromatic molecules interact with the top of your nasal cavity, and with tiny olfactory nerves located in the roof of the inner nose. Also, essential oils activate the limbic system, which is the part of the brain that regulates attention span, behavior, emotion, long-term memory, etc.

The topical application method is used on your skin. When applied to the body, essential oils penetrate the skin via the hair follicles and sweat glands and are absorbed into the body fluids, where they not only help to kill bacteria and viruses but also stimulate the body's immune system, thereby strengthening resistance to further attack.

This is how aromatherapy works and how it can enhance our body and spirit. However, the results of aromatherapy are very individual specific and vary from person to person. The basic fact is that no two people are influenced by the same aromatic oil in exactly the same way and manner. What is more, even the same person can be significantly affected differently by the same oil depending on surroundings, time or mood.
